Inverness Architectural Association Awards 2014

12 Nov 2014
Russwood was delighted to attend the biennial Inverness Architectural Association Awards 2014, held on 7th November at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, situated in Sleat on the stunning Isle of Skye.  The day-time schedule and the evening meal and ceilidh were very well attended by speakers and guests alike, and the island location proved enchanting, adding a certain (and very effective) je ne sais quoi to the entire event. As well as providing a presence at the evening event, Russwood sponsored the Best Use of Timber category in this year’s awards.  As in previous years, all of the categories were incredibly well represented by some truly stunning entries, with the use of timber being notable throughout many of the entrants, not merely limited to the timber category.  Russwood products featured in so many of the entrants that we could not possibly list them here, but we are obviously delighted to know that our timber was part of many designs considered for shortlisting, commending and winning.Russwood would like to offer thanks to the IAA, for both the opportunity for sponsorship and inclusion in the initial review panel and category selection process.  We were incredibly impressed with the standard all of the various regional entrants, the variety of architectural styles, plus the complexity and innovation inherent within the designs – and very grateful that the responsibility for shortlist selection did not lie with us!

Retirement at Russwood

30 Jul 2014
Russwood bid a sad but fond farewell to its longest serving member of staff last week.  Clocking up an impressive 32 year continuous period of employment with us, Willie Ritchie has decided to retire. His career within Russwood began after a chance meeting with John Russell, who offered Willie a lift as he was hitching up to Inverness to visit his new-born son!  Starting with the very physical and demanding role of coal breaker, his roles within the company have adapted as Russwood has, spanning coal delivery (as far afield as Fort William); production in the round post plant (fencing materials); treatment plant operator, yard supervisor and finally rounding off his impressive resume as an essential member of the team within the flooring department. This has been his most defining role, and the one he will be most sorely missed in.  With duties encompassing quality control; order receiving, packaging and sending; stock management; sample oiling; and not forgetting operating and maintaining our woodchip boiler system, he has proved invaluable to the day to day operation of what is proving to be a very successful aspect of our business.  We daresay it will be a long time yet before we remember that “Willie can’t do that – because he isn’t here!”The weather blessed us with sunshine for his send off, and all staff enjoyed saying good bye at a traditional Russwood BBQ held rather fittingly on site – at the flooring yard!  Past and present employees joined in wishing him well in his retirement, and in conjunction with a thank you speech by John, presented Willie and his wife Tessa with a few thoughtful gifts to show our appreciation of his input throughout the years.  Proving that old habits die hard, Willie, obviously forgetting that he no longer had to, took advantage of the impromptu appearance of a delivery driver to carry his last flooring order out to the waiting van.We wish him a long and happy retirement filled with laughter, happiness and most importantly, time to enjoy his interests –maybe even a new career as a line-dancing supremo beckons!  All the best Willie, from all of us at Russwood.  We will miss you.

23 Jun 2014
Russwood offer congratulations to all winners of the RIAS Awards, announced this week at the annual Awards dinner in Glasgow. Of the 83 entries, 13 winners were announced as representing the very best in current architecture within Scotland, with the building types ranging in cost and scale from £26,000 to £125 million, demonstrating the range and versatility of the entries. Russwood paid particular attention to the three Special Category Awards, two of which featured our trademark cladding; Russwood Scotlarch®.  The Historic Scotland Award for Conservation and Climate Change was awarded to LDN Architects for their sympathetic revival of Knockando Woolmill, which featured both our Scotlarch® cladding and Maritime Pine flooring.  Historic Scotland’s Chief Executive, Ian Walford said of the project:  “The commendable work at the wool mill was carried out sensitively and to the highest standards, to ensure a long term and sustainable future for this important site”.GLM Architects were awarded the Wood for Good/Forestry Commission Scotland Award for the Best Use of Timber for the Inn at John O’Groats, which features a colourful array of vacuum coated Scotlarch® cladding on the exterior of the new accommodation attached to the iconic Inn.

Sponsoring the Wombles

16 May 2014
Russwood was recently approached by the Badenoch branch of Health and Happiness, a Highland wide, community focused, charitable organisation that promotes health and happiness in adults with learning difficulties, to provide sponsorship for a new venture: the Highland Wildlife project.  Working in conjunction with Caberfeidh Horizons, a Kingussie based bookshop providing employment for those with special needs, and The Highland Wildlife Park, Kincraig, this latest project places a small group of local individuals in the position of community ambassadors and provides an excellent opportunity for positive social experiences for the group and Wildlife Park visitors alike.Russwood joined the self-titled Wildlife Wombles earlier today at Kincraig to hand over a cheque for the equipment the Wombles will need during the coming year.  We had a great time meeting everybody, and the enthusiasm and energy of the group really impressed us.  Chatting with Pete Carson, a Community Connector for Health and Happiness and group leader (or Chief Wildlife Womble!), he was happy to give us more information on how the project will progress and the benefits that it will bring to those involved:“We are working with The Park for a year – with six folk with learning disability ( we call them “experts” as they are the expert in their own life ) going along every Friday. They have called themselves ‘The Wildlife Wombles’ and we have reflective jackets with that printed on the back. The project is divided into three parts.

Russwood's Rusty Angels raise rewards

20 Dec 2013
Those of you who can remember the heady days of summer may remember us mentioning that three of Russwood’s hard working staff members had joined forces to create a fundraising team called ‘The Rusty Angels’.  They pledged to complete this year’s Scottish Cycletta - a whopping 40 mile, women's only bicycle ride on 15th September, and made good on their promise on possibly one of the windiest, wettest days we saw this autumn! The Rusty Angels blew their sponsorship target of £250 out of the water, and raised an amazing £595.00 for Macmillan Cancer Support!  We are immensely proud of them, and Craig Myerscough (Macmillan fundraising representative, and coincidently our new sales team member) is pictured here accepting the cheque on behalf of Macmillan from Annette, Liz and Heather.A resounding thank you on behalf of the Rusty Angels to all of you who contributed to this impressive sponsorship total.  Time now for the girls to start getting in practise for next years challenge - only maybe they'll wait until the weather improves!

Your Russwood Floor

26 Jul 2013
For most of our customers who are building a brand new house, or renovating their existing home, selecting your floor is a key purchase decision.   It is not until the project is complete, usually a few weeks after the floor has been laid (and once the chaos has subsided!) that you start to think about how you are going to look after your floor, and protect it from muddy boots, pets, spills, stains and everyday wear and tear. Before you tackle the floor with any available cleaning solution (from boiling water, to fairy liquid, to steel wool – we have heard it all!) please download and print our “Step-by-step Guide to Fitting & Finishing Your Russwood Floor”.  This explains in detail which products we would recommend to you, and how they should be used on your floor.  It is of vital importance that you use the correct products, in order to take care of the hardwax oiled finish.By spending just a few minutes each week on the upkeep of your real wood floor you will ensure that it retains its beauty and vibrancy for a lifetime. To purchase the products recommended in the guide, please go to our online shop or call the flooring team on 01540 673 648.

Tiree Boathouse Complete

4 Jul 2013
We are pleased to report that, after a pretty intensive seven days, the Tog project to build a boathouse (from scratch!) for the Maritime Boat Trust on Tiree is now complete.Alaister Jeffrey from Russwood’s cladding team participated in the last two days of the build, where he was a part of the sub-team fitting Russwood’s Siberian Larch cladding.  He was back in the office this week, thoroughly enthusiastic about the project, and impressed at the dedication of the entire team, who worked through until 10pm on the final day to make sure that every last detail was finished perfectly.Alaister reported that, “Russwood has always had close links with architects and our involvement in this project was a way of showing support, but it also proved to be an incredibly useful and informative visit for me.  The practical experience was a departure from the norm, but the knowledge gained will assist me greatly when advising clients.  I am certain that the other participants will all have learnt from their (very hard-working) time on the site.

Tog build progressing well

26 Jun 2013
Back in March of this year we announced that we were delighted to be sponsoring the Tog 2013 project to build a boatshed for the Maritime Boat Trust (read the article here). After a few months of discussions with the Tog project team about the properties of timber, recommended detailing, maintenance and fittings, 600lm of Siberian Larch cladding was delivered to site in May ready for transportation to Tiree. After the pre-fabrication of a MAKLab ply-portal frame by GalGael in Glasgow, the dramatic curved structure (which is meant to conjure up images of an upturned boat) was delivered to Tiree last week, and a team of volunteers, ranging from students of architecture and engineering through to experienced architects (and our very own Alaister Jeffrey, who is going to be assisting with the cladding installation) arrived on site to commence the ambitious week long build.Work began on 21st June, and a photo diary on the Maritime Boat Trust’s website shows the remarkable progress made already.  The concrete slabs have been laid,  power connected, four frames erected and roof almost complete…which hopefully means that the team is on track to fit the cladding at the end of this week.   The boathouse will then be ready to house the renovated Tiree Dipping Lugs.We wish the team in Tiree all the best for the final days of the build, and we look forward to seeing photos of the completed build next week…watch this space.
