On the 29th September, Russwood travelled to Pisek, via Prague, with a selection of architects from various practices across Scotland. Working in conjunction with our partners Esco, the aim of the trip was to further their knowledge and understanding with regards to the production and design possibilities of our timber flooring, and equated to our most in-depth, extended CPD event yet!

As well as taking in the beautiful sights of Pisek and surrounding area, over the course of a full day, we went to Radomysl to visit the family owned factory where the production of our oak flooring takes place.

This incredibly informative insight into the creation of Russwood’s oak flooring covered all of the production stages: from the timber arriving as raw planks through to the final processes of hand finishing that lends to the uniqueness of the product.

To summarise what is a lengthy and highly involved process, the planks arrive to be kiln-dried to the optimum moisture content for internal use before being moulded (shaped to specification) and planed to create the basic starting point of the board.  From this stage onwards, the boards can be subject to a variety of machine or hand-finishing techniques (in a humidity controlled environment) depending on the finish required, ranging from filling, sanding, hand scraping, smoking (to enhance the natural tannins), rolling, brushing, cross-sawing, oiling (and this list is far from exhaustive) before being wrapped and stored prior to delivery.

The factory also creates the engineered flooring in house, ensuring the entire manufacturing process is under their control.  The environmental credentials of the PEFC certification, and others such as DIBt accreditation, are earned and maintained by the exemplary record keeping and attention to detail evident within this incredibly efficient family business, and this was very obvious during our visit.

After a wonderfully fact filled and eye opening visit to the factory, our group retired to one of the local eateries in Pisek, featuring the flooring from the factory not only underfoot, but as a wall cladding also! Everyone was blown away by the generosity and welcoming nature of our hosts, and feedback from our invited guests indicated that the entire trip was a fantastic insight not only into the processes involved in creating the flooring, but the pride of workmanship displayed by those who work there.

Since returning on the 1st October, we have received such wonderful comments as:
