Russwood’s factory coated cladding guarantees a consistent, high quality finish and optimal long term product performance.

Due to the increasing popularity of painted cladding, as an alternative to naturally weathered timber, Russwood manufacture factory coated cladding at our modern in-house coating facility; the first of its kind in Scotland. By treating the timber under factory-controlled conditions we can guarantee that the application will be of a consistently high standard, and that the resulting end-product will offer enhanced aesthetic and durability properties as well as a reduced maintenance cycle.

In the past, many of our customers chose to paint their cladding on-site, but following the installation of our paint-line in 2011, the benefits of ordering cladding pre-coated have been widely recognised by specifiers, contractors and self-builders. As you can see from the following comparison table and independently commissioned test results, the process brings a number of significant advantages.

Benefits of Factory Coated Cladding

  Russwood factory coatingOn-site paint application
Paint and Primer Type Primer and top coat are water-based and environmentally friendly Any paint can be used therefore the suitability and environmental credentials are not guaranteed
Paint Colours Any opaque RAL colour and a range of 48 translucent shades from Teknos, are available Any paint can be used therefore the suitability, compatability and environmental credentials are not guaranteed
Coating Application 1 coat of primer and 2 top coats in a shade of your choice ensure that the wood is protected and the finish even on all sides Difficult to monitor the quantity and quality of primer and top coat used
Initial Costs Russwood charge a set price, quoted upfront, for coated cladding; this includes all preparation, coating, drying, storage and delivery. Labour, painting equipment and scaffolding (if required) costs will be incurred, plus the potential cost of project delays due to adverse weather conditions should be taken into consideration.
Ongoing Costs Factory coated timber is more durable than on-site painted timber so maintenance costs are lower After the paint is applied it will require frequent re-application, at considerable cost
Finish & Durability
Weather Conditions Required for Application Coating is applied under factory conditions, to timber which is dried to the optimum moisture content of 16-18% (+/- 2), so weather is irrelevant In order to avoid the adverse effects of excess moisture dry weather conditions are required for a number of days.
Sealing Boards are coated on all four sides Often, only the front face is coated, leaving the back and ends of the boards uncoated and therefore exposed to the elements
Resistance to the Elements Product is water-repellent and UV-protected Durability properties vary and are dependent on factors such as application conditions, on-site expertise and paint quality
Aesthetic Products Consistently applied factory coating guarantees a flawless finish Inconsistencies in application may lead to a less-than-perfect end-result
Maintenance Required Although re-application will be required, the initial coating will last longer than if it was applied on-site Coating will require frequent re-application
Advice & Delivery
Time Taken from Order to Finished Product Please check with our sales team for current lead times After delivery, completion will be entirely dependent on weather conditions
Advice Available Timber, detailing, profile and fixing advice is part of the standard Russwood service This will be dependent on the timber cladding experience of the on-site team

As you can see from the above, the benefits of factory coated cladding are manifold, not only for clients but also for architects, builders and other sub-contractors. Russwood offer a selection of different timbers (Scotlarch®, Thermopine, Siberian Larch, Architect Select® Western Red Cedar and Accoya® wood), which can be factory coated for orders of more than 50m2.

Weathering and Durability Performance testing

Russwood has conducted extensive trials in partnership with the Forest Products Research Institute at Edinburgh Napier University to compare the weathering and durability performance of our factory coated cladding against a brush coated alternative.

Three species were tested – Accoya®, Scotlarch® and Architect Select® Western Red Cedar. As expected, the independent set of results confirmed the significant benefits of factory coated cladding. To view the full test report, click here.

Suitability & Basic Recommendations

It should be recognised that suitability for factory coating varies greatly between cladding products and requires careful selection of species, profile, finish and paint type to ensure optimal performance. The correct selection of the above will depend on the project in question and as experts in our field, we are well placed to make suitable recommendations based on your individual project requirements.

Scotlarch® Specific Recommendations

Larch, of all species, is prone to surface checking. Whilst this is an innate characteristic of the species, it can have an adverse effect on the performance of a coating - this is especially true when using a dressed face profile where surface checks can be more pronounced. In addition, when coating Scotlarch® some boards can be affected by resin exudation which can be unsightly. For the above reasons we would recommend using a sawn-face finish when factory coating Scotlarch®.

Colour Selector

Our factory coated cladding is available in most opaque RAL Colours – if you advise us of the RAL number, or specify this in the H21, then we will happily supply cladding coated with this shade. Alternatively, for a translucent finish we can supply 48 Teknos colours - to see the comprehensive range please take a look at the PDF’s below;

We are happy to provide up to four cladding samples of most species with a factory coated finish in a non-specific colour free of charge, including postage. However, for samples of cladding coated with specific colours we will charge £35 + VAT per sample up to a maximum of four (this is because, due to the extensive range available, we do not hold stock of all colours and therefore must order in the colour requested).
