This is often a personal preference, based on factors such as appearance and cost. We provide a choice of timbers, ranging from Thermopine to Garapa, all of which can provide a long-lasting and beautiful timber deck. We have created a comparison guide to ensure you are able to easily decide which timber best suits your needs.
Firstly, calculate how many square metres your project will require, then add between 5 – 10% onto the figure calculated. This allows for wastage or on-site damage to the timber. It is worth noting that the inconvenience and extra costs incurred of not ordering enough timber can be quite significant.
The deck is normally the last part to be completed in a new build, unless it is needed for access whilst the project is under construction.
Russwood offer a range of innovative fixing systems for decking. These include secret fix clips, adjustable substructure supports, compensation strip for enhanced ventilation and precision milled stainless steel screws. In all instances we can advise on the appropriate number of fixings you will need in order to secure your deck.
There are a variety of anti-slip solutions available for timber decking, ranging from self-applied tapes and paints, to professionally fitted solutions that can be retro-fitted to your deck (after it has been installed). Our solution to this potential problem is applied in-house before the timber decking is delivered. GripDeck® can be fitted to your decking board of choice, and will provide a long-lasting solution, with no need for any maintenance or re-application. Having been rated as “extremely low potential for slip” (BS7976:2002 Part-1 3 using the Stanley Pendulum Test), GripDeck® is ideal in situations where health and safety regulations need to be adhered to.
Ideally it should be used as soon as it arrives on site. However, if the decking must be stored, it should be on bearers, with the top of the pack covered, so air can still get to it, and out of direct sunlight. Please ensure that the straps and stickers (smaller pieces of timber going cross ways at certain layers) are still in place until you're ready to use the decking – this ensures adequate airflow throughout the decking boards.
Our decking is provided to you at the optimum moisture content of 16 – 18% (+/- 2%).
The recommended fixing distances for decking vary according to the projected footfall of your deck. For commercial and domestic projects, we would recommend fixing at 400mm centres maximum.
Pre-drilling is recommended with Garapa hardwood decking owing to the more dense nature of the timber.
We recommend stainless steel decking screws, as the stainless steel provides inherent corrosion protection. The sharp flanks of the L-GoFix® screw thread allow optimum anchoring without causing the timber to split and the precision milled splines on the shaft enable them to be quickly and easily driven into the wood surface. However, it should be noted that our screws are recommended only for use with a power drill.
Unsightly corrosive stains will occur when non-stainless steel fittings are used on naturally durable timbers. Stainless steel fixings must be used as it is not always possible to remove such stains.
Secret fixing has evolved as a design solution and is now more than just an aesthetic preference. The DielenFix® not only provides a clean, contemporary appearance but also provides an optimally ventilated deck with no water traps, assuming it has been correctly detailed. This ultimately increases the lifespan of your deck.
Yes, a gap between the boards allows for drainage of surface water and airflow around and beneath the boards. This ensures that a build-up of moisture, which could compromise the durability of your deck and cause unsightly staining of the timber, does not occur
We recommend a gap of 6mm between the boards for best practice installation.
Yes, a gap between the substructure and decking increases ventilation. A well ventilated structure will increase the durability of a deck by allowing the timber to dry out quickly and completely between wetting cycles. To create this ventilation gap we recommend using KompeFix® (for a face-fixed deck) or DielenFix® (for a secret fixed deck).
If left untreated, your timber deck will weather to a muted silver/grey colour regardless of the species chosen.
If you use stainless steel screws, as recommended, we would not expect a colour change to occur.
Pressure treatment is an impregnation of your timber which is applied in-house. This is a single treatment that will last for the lifetime of your deck.
There are a few factors that determine the re-coating requirement; the main two being the footfall of your deck and the exposure it receives from the elements. As a general rule you can expect to re-coat your deck twice a year. For this reason, SiOO:X may be seen as the preferable option.
We would recommend regular brushing with a stiff broom in order to remove dirt and other debris, and this will help to reduce grease and mildew. If the deck is grooved, ensure that the grooves are kept clean as this will help to get rid of standing water. It is also recommended that the deck should be given an entire surface clean using a power spray every spring. This will rejuvenate the surface of your deck and keep your timber looking beautiful.

Lead times for delivery can vary from a matter of days for stock items, to a number of weeks for custom profiles and pressure-treated orders. Please enquire about current stock levels and/or lead times when ordering.
We organise our own delivery, using a hi-ab off-loading service. On occasion we use an approved external haulier/courier who will always require off-loading assistance at the point of delivery. We advise on this whilst organising delivery in each instance.
We deliver all over the UK. However, it should be noted that, although we do all we can to minimise decking delivery costs, it is regrettably the case that for small orders the cost of delivery to the South of England can be disproportionately high.
It depends on location, but it is always best to have someone on-site to sign for the goods.
Generally your order will be polythene wrapped, strapped and offloaded by hi-ab within Scotland. If your delivery is in England, an off-load facility will need to be organised as the delivery will be by external courier. This will be confirmed by our haulage department.
Delivery costs vary and are dependent on location.
We are always happy to offer advice to our customers on our decking products, whether it is on the installation, aesthetics or best practice procedures. If you are currently at the design stage of your deck, please refer to our decking comparison guide and gallery in order to help choose the deck which will best suit your individual needs, and feel free to contact us if you have any further queries on our products.
All of our decking is FSC and PEFC certified and we can provide certification upon request.
