Life sciences applies man’s newest technologies to nature’s oldest enigma. It’s a fitting brief also for Plot 8, the life sciences building at the new Inverness Campus.
Created by Threesixty Architecture for Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Plot 8 combines a modern aesthetic with traditional materials in keeping with the site’s woodland setting. While the design team favoured timber cladding for its warm natural effect, they needed a finish that was crisp, clean and light on maintenance. The answer was Accoya® wood.
Considered the world’s leading high technology long life wood, Accoya® provided a BRE A+ rated material with outstanding stability, creating a sharp aesthetic. The horizontal opened board was finished in grey (PR550) and warm wood (F1024), creating a striking contrast and defining the architectural language. The stable nature of the wood also allowed for finishing touches such as mitred edges and vertical fins.
Crucially, the space is highly practical and efficient, achieving BREEAM Excellent rating and requiring little maintenance thanks to the dimensional stability of the wood and the durable vacuum coating. The aesthetic is confident but warm, modern but timeless – a building that enhances its setting and suggests a world of possibilities.
