Set on the waterside of Loch Insh, Inshbreck embraces its enviable location. Full-height bi-fold doors flood the rooms with light and bring the living space out into the landscape. Starting out on their build, Lorna and Gary Stoddart were anxious to avoid the ‘boxy’ feel of their existing Doran bungalow. Lorna had inherited the site from her father, who acted as the legal agent for the Forestry Commission, the previous owners of the birchwood on the banks of Loch Insh. The location was stunning, but the building notoriously inefficient, and planning permission was granted for its replacement.
Gray Marshall & Associates created a solution that’s anything but boxy: a light and spacious design featuring a ridge beam that opens up the spaces to reveal a dramatic full-height livingroom and mezzanine.
When it came to sourcing materials, client and architect were on the same page. Lorna and Gary were determined to use local suppliers, and Gray Marshall views Russwood as their first port of call. They selected solid oak flooring (brushed white), Scotlarch ® cladding and Garapa decking.
The architect said: “I send lots of clients to Russwood. The staff don’t try to sell you a floor; instead they fit the product to the project, and the quality is excellent.” Alan Marshall, Gray Marshall & Associates.
