The development of a fine Victorian villa in Bruntsfield, Edinburgh, is a master class in marrying traditional features with contemporary design. When Helen Lucas Architects Limited accepted a brief to expand their client’s home and bring in more light, the firm set about creating a solution that restored the period features of the home whilst updating it with energy-efficient, accessible and light-filled modern additions.
The vast project included two purpose-built rear glazed extensions, a new roof, windows and wiring, plus the loving restoration of the front elevation of the home. When it came to the flooring, the clients presented Helen Lucas Architects with a photograph of an historic floor featuring basket-weave Parquet, asking if a similar floor could be recreated. Russwood rose to the challenge, creating a stunning bespoke floor. With its matte, smoked planks and distinctive basket pattern, the floor is a striking complement to the Victorian entryway and winding staircase. Being compatible with under-floor heating, it also met the client’s brief for a more energy-efficient and comfortable living space.
The same planks laid as long board provide a pleasing contrast in the adjacent living spaces, while features such as Japanese ‘shoji’ sliding screens set in tracks in the flooring are an unexpected and interesting twist.
The client was delighted with the bespoke product delivered by Russwood. “The parquet and plank flooring are excellent products,” said Rosalind Love of Helen Lucas Architects Limited. “Russwood provided a good, informative service, and Braidwoods Building Contractors were also happy to work with Russwood.”
