MAC Architects’ design for a private Aberdeen-based client offers the best of the natural and built environments, with a sustainable, modern aesthetic complementing a harmonious woodland setting.

Set in the Aberdeen suburb of Stoneywood, Westwood Villa is a private new build house flanked by forests, with overlooking business premises to the rear. The client and their growing family needed a contemporary, energy efficient design that maximised their privacy whilst offering the flexibility of open plan living.

The resulting building boasts floor to ceiling windows in every room, with a sense of openness boosted by full height, frameless internal doors. Russwood’s Smoked Chateau Oak Flooring adds a warm and tactile finish to the interior spaces, while externally the building is clad entirely in timber. This timber envelope is created using Accoya, factory coated with a translucent finish. The build features 2,600 linear metres of this super-insulated material, resulting in a highly-efficient SAP ‘A’ rating.

Architect Jonathan Cheyne described Russwood as “very professional with regards to the right timber to meet our client’s design brief, and extremely helpful in allowing our clients a tour of the factory to see their potential cladding options and finishes.

Aberdeen Society of Architects Awards 2016: Winner of both "Project of the Year" & "Best New Building".
